Ebonyi: Six students burnt to death, 9 injured in auto crash

Six people believed to be students of Madonna University, Okija, in Anambra state were burnt to death in a crash along the Abakaliki-Enugu highway on Friday.

Daily Trust gathered that the accident happened at about 6:00pm on Friday.

An eyewitness, Chukwuma Ogwa who spoke to journalists said the crash was a head-on collision involving two commercial buses.

Ogwa added that it took the efforts of villagers who were alerted to rescue the other students who sustained injuries.

“The accident happened on Friday evening just near the bridge which is just about two poles to Ezzamgbo general hospital between two commercial buses.

“One of the buses which was carrying the students went off the road and somersaulted into the bush and caught fire.

“So it took the efforts of villagers to put out the fire and at the same time use an axe to break the bus so as to rescue the passengers in one of the buses,” he explained.

When contacted the Public Education Officer of Federal Road Safety Commission, Ebonyi state command, Monday Okoro confirmed that 9 persons were injured and six killed.

“Out of the nine, eight were male and one female. Six persons were killed, among which were four male and two female.

“Those killed were taken to FETHA 2 and deposited at the morgue. Those injured were taken to the same hospital for treatment”
