Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar have advocated for a regional unity school to foster peace and unity in the north.
The duo made the call at the Sultan Palace, Sokoto when the former President led the National Executive Committee of the Barewa Old Boys Association (BOBA) on a courtesy call on the monarch who is also a member of the association on Friday.
In his remarks, Gowon said there is the need for the college (Barewa) to be upgraded to a regional unity school where student from different religions, tribes and ethnicity could be admitted.
“I thank Almighty Allah for giving me the opportunity to attend the school where I mingled with my brothers from different part of the north and with different tribes and religion.
“The college needs to be allowed to admit as many students as possible from the 12 northern states because this will bring a lot of unity, peace and understanding in the region,” the former military leader said
Gowon who was represented by the immediate past president of BOBA, Alhaji Umar Mutallab said over 300 members of the association are in Sokoto for the 2018 annual lecture/dinner and recognition awards event which also coincided with the 12th years anniversary of the Sultan.
He explained that the programmes were part of their centenary celebration which commenced last year in Katsina.
He thanked the Sultan and the Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for the warm reception accorded their members.
Responding, Sultan Sa’ad said the best solution to northern problems was looking back at what Barewa had been in those years and its intakes.
