Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has urged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to the state for the one year mandatory national service to up hold the fundamental objectives of the scheme by promoting national integration, and be vanguards for protecting Nigeria’s growing democracy.
He made the call on Thursday while declaring open the three weeks orientation course of the 2018 Batch ‘C’ stream 1 corps members at the permanent NYSC orientation camp at Kusallah Dam in Karaye local government area.
The governor whose speech was read by the Chairman NYSC governing board Kano state, Alhaji Ado Abba Tudunwada asserted that the scheme has over the past 45 years of its existence been aiding developmental initiatives of the government, calling on the corps members to key in vigorously to the national campaign against hate speech and fake news which he described as a threat to the peace and security of the nation’s democracy.
“My dear corps members our country is now driven towards 2019 general elections where citizens of this country would come out to elect leaders that would govern their affairs for the next four years; therefore, I charge you to subordinate yourselves to the rule of law and be vanguards for protecting our growing democracy. Consequently, you are to join the national campaign against hate speech and fake news which have become threat to peace, security and our democracy. We must sensitise our citizens on the dangers posed, how to spot them and what to do the check the menace of fake news and hate speech” Ganduje implored.
While calling on them to be loyal and hard working through the 3-week orientation course, the governor further advised them to guard their utterances and conducts, saying that could jeopardize the reputation of the scheme and that of their families.
In his address the NYSC state coordinator, Alhaji Ladan Baba appealed to the state government to rehabilitate the feeder road leading to the orientation camp in order to make the camp more accessible and conducive for the orientation exercises.
No less than 2450 young graduates were sworn in for the mandatory national exercise.
