6 killed in fresh Mgbo-Igala boundary clash

At least six persons were feared dead while scores sustained various injuries in a renewed inter-state border clash between the people of Igala in Benue state and Mgbo in Ohankwu local government area of Ebonyi state on Wednesday.

Daily Trust gathered that the crisis which has claimed many lives and property worth millions of Naira destroyed including farm produce, started since 1967.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the crisis broke out on Monday morning.

The source also said that several farm produce were destroyed and hundreds of persons essentially from the side of Igala people have fled their homes for fear of revenge by the Mgbo people who suffered causalities in the recent attack.

He said, “both communities have been locked in a protracted dispute over a large parcel of farmland and the crisis had lingered for a very long time.

“Unfortunately, the situation seemed to have gotten out of hand again on Monday morning when youths from our neighbouring community, Agali attacked us during the early hours of the day.

“As l speak to you now, the picture of people killed were still very unclear to us but we have recovered 6 dead bodies killed while they were in the farms cultivating their produce”, he said.

Though, our correspondent gathered that the people of Igala who allegedly invaded the Mgbo people met a stiff resistance.

Daily Trust further gathered that the crisis mostly occurs during farming or harvest season.

However, the Ebonyi state deputy governor, Dr. Kelechi Igwe who visited the scene of the incident today, appealed to the people of Mgbo community to remain calm.
