The SouthEast Bureau Chief of ThisDay Newspapers, Chris Isiguzo on Friday emerged as the new President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Isiguzo floored the incumbent, Waheed Odusile in the hotly contested election at just concluded 6th Delegates Conference of union held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Returning Officer from Nigeria Labour Congress, Benson Upah, declared Isiguzo winner having polled 346 votes against Odusile who scored 329 votes.
Other contestants for the presidential seat polled as follow, Bamidele Atunbi had 101 votes, Abiodun Olalere got 56 votes, Jacob Edi polled 16 votes, Alademka Adelegan had 9 votes, while Uzaka Abraham polled 30 votes.
Announcing the results at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta on Friday, Upah commended the peaceful conduct of all the participants.
Winners equally emerged into other national positions, zonal Vice Presidents and Secretaries.
In his inaugural address, Isiguzo described the election as “most transparent, free and fair election in the history of NUJ.”
He vowed to pursue vigorously issues of welfare for journalists and tackle head-long the foundational challenges confronting the NUJ.
“I want to tell you that in this election, there is no victor and no vangushied. We have all won,” the newly elected President declared.
