Kwami youth plant 500 tree seedlings to curtail erosion

The Kwami Youth Consultative Forum (KYCOF) in Kwami local government area of Gombe state has planted over 500 Mahogany and Neem tree seedlings, to control erosion and desertification in the area.

Flagging off the exercise at a gully erosion site in Kwami town, Chairman of the KYCOF, Malam Muhammad Usman said they embark on the exercise to halt the encroachment of their farm lands by desertification.

He said the forum was making more efforts to acquire more seedlings to be planted at other locations in Kwami town and the neighboring villages also threaten by gully erosion.

The youth forum appealed to the state, federal government and relevant agencies to come to their aid and control the erosion that ravages the area for decades, threatening to cut off two culverts that have been partially washed away along the Gombe-Dukku Federal Highway.

Our correspondent, who visited the site, observed that two bridges on southern and northern part of the town were almost cut off by the erosion forcing motorists to resort to only one lane of the road.

The forum warned that if the bridges along the road, which connects Gombe and other states in the north-west part of the country, collapse it would affect the means of livelihood of many commuters and motorists who ply the road daily.
