A model of strength, fortitude and dignity, the Emir of Lapai, His Royal Highness, Engineer Umaru Bago 111[CON] believes that the game of golf is not only life but it’s even more complicated than life.
Bago, in his simplistic elegance right inside his massive palace in Lapai drew several instances that make golf such a complicated game. Viewing issues with a sense of detached amusement, the Emir, an accomplished Engineer, believes golf is like a solitaire where if you cheat, you can only cheat yourself. According to the Emir, golf is a game of great tradition, of high ideals of sportsmanship, one in which a strict adherence to the rules is essential.
“I hear people talk about luck in this game but I don’t believe it”, the Emir said. “You see, golf like in life, is a serious business. It’s what you put in that you get back. For instance, if you are on a putting green and you are too lazy to remove even the smallest impediment that is obstructing your putt, you may miss that putt. It’s like this in life. If you can’t push off things that are troubling you it could be difficult to make a success out of life”.
Displaying such infectious enthusiasm, the Emir, in presence of the Madaki of Lapai, Abdulkadir Maudibo, releed off his journey through golf.
From the beginning, the Emir did not come out to play golf. He was into tennis and horse riding. Despite engaging in such strenuous form of exercise, the Emir was usually falling sick. As this was persisting, his bossom friend and the Madaki implored him to join him and play golf. The Emir, who is indeed blunt and funny joined and in no time got completely hooked.
Severally, the Emir was embarking on an hour trip to Minna so he could play. This was becoming strenuous and burdensome. It was at this point the idea to build a golf course in Lapai crossed his mind. With land donated by Senator Jubril Salisu, a nine hole course was quickly laid out by the Resident Professional of the Minna Club, Martin Odoh.. Here, the Emir and the Madaki play regularly. Besides, membership drive for the club is ongoing with lecturers from the IBB University showing tremendous interest.
“There are plans to further develop the Club”, the Emir said. “We want to make this course a full blown 18 holes with a hotel attached to it. This will make it look attractive to tourists who can pass time in this Emirate. Truly it will cost a lot to get the course in shape but when a venture gives you total happiness, the money won’t bother you. This is even more essential since our Governor is showing great interest in the game. The Governor has been asking to have a game with me,
“Again, I will reach out to Senator David Mark who once served as a Military Governor here. I am making moves to go and have a game in his course at Otukpo. After this I will invite to come and play here. After seeing our course, he might want to put in some form of aid to speed up development”.
The Madaki, a keen golfer, is also of the opinion that with the membership drive being embarked upon, the course will soon be on path to greatness”.
