A suspect the Lagos State police command described as a leader of the Eiye confraternity, Malik Onebiri, alias Kobad Baron, has been arrested for allegedly killing a police sergeant during a protest at the Ifako-Ijaiye area of the Lagos metropolis.
The police said it was Onebiri who fired the shot that killed Sergeant Collins Esiabor on August 29, 2018.
Daily Trust learnt that Onebiri’s arrest brought to 19 suspected members of the Eiye confraternity so far arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of Sergeant Esiabor. They are all being detained at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had penultimate Monday paraded eight persons, including the head of a masquerade group in connection with the killing.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed Onobiri’s arrest, said that a mob comprising mainly of members of the Eiye confraternity had attacked a police patrol team at the Haruna Bus Stop, Ifako Ijaiye, killing Sergeant Esiabor in the process.
Oti said the mob attacked the policeman to revenge the death of their fellow cult colleague whom he said fatally injured himself while fleeing when he sighted a patrol team. He added that the suspected arrowhead of the attack, Onebiri, fled the state immediately after the attack and murder.
“However, through discreet investigation carried out on the matter, police detectives arrested Malik Onebiri in his hideout in Gboko, Benue State,” he said.
