Mopol beheaded by ‘cultists’ in Plateau

A headless body of a mobile police officer cut off by the suspected cultists has been found in Jos city of Plateau state.

The body was found behind New Township Stadium along Zaria road in Jos North Local Government area of the state.

The mopol identified as Unana Ishay was from Mopo 56 and attached to Sector One of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) – a security taskforce saddled with the responsibility of restoring and maintaining peace in the state.

Police command in the state said the mopol was beheaded last Saturday when he left his base with the intention of buying Suya.

The Police Public Relation Officer, (PPRO) in the state, Tyopev Terna explained that his command knew about the beheading when a Captain in the Nigeria Army, Joer Olaruwaju reported the incident at the Laranto Police Division.

Terna clarified that the sergeant left the base on the 1st of September, 2018 with the intention of buying Suya and didn’t come back to his base.

“The corpse has been deposited at the Plateau Specialist Hospital,” he said.

He added that investigation is ongoing to fish out the assailants.

An official at the Farar Gada Market where the incident took place spoke with Daily Trust on condition of anynomity said they found the headless body of the mopol when he was called by his colleagues at the market.

He said, “As stakeholders in the market, on Saturday morning, we were called to go and see for ourselves the body of the policeman because the area where the body was found is close to our market.”

“When we went there, his body was lying on the ground, I couldn’t calm myself because the head was cut off. I quickly turned back. I don’t want to be remembering what would disturb my sleep,” he said.

He said that the circumstances surrounding the killing are still unclear but people around the area alleged that it was connected to the activities of cultists in the area.

Daily Trust observed that there was panic around the area following the discovery of the dead body as police officers are being seen since Saturday patrolling the area.
