Northern Governors move to find lasting solutions to herdsmen /farmers crisis

Against the backdrop of recurring problem of farmers and herdsmen clashes in the country, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has moved to find lasting solutions to it.

This came to fore at the forum’s meeting with the national leadership and state chapters of the Miyetti Allah cattle Breeders Association held in Sokoto.

Chairman of the forum Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state said they hope to adopt local-conflict resolution mechanism to bring back trust and understanding among all the people of the region.

He disclosed that the 19 northern states were worried by the rising cases of insecurity involving herders and farmers.

He said, “We have seen enough crises in the North East with Boko Haram. We cannot afford to let any other conflict linger without a solution."

"We hope to hear from all sides and finally come up with a workable plan that will restore confidence and entrench lasting peace in our region,” he stated.

Shettima said their intervention was to complement efforts of the federal government and was   optimistic that the move would facilitate a lasting solution to the conflicts.

Other Governors present at the meeting included; Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) Abdullahi Gande, (Kano) and Nasir El-Rufai(Kaduna).

A statement by his Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on Media, Imam Imam said no resolution was reached at the meeting.

He however said  other meetings have been  scheduled to hold in Abuja, Jos, Makurdi and Kaduna in the coming weeks and months.
