ASUU to raise N200m for IDPs in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is to raise N200 million from its members across 60 universities in the country to provide relief materials for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Bayero University Kano (BUK) branch chairman of the union, Dr. Ibrahim Barde, told Daily Trust in Maiduguri that the IDPs that will benefit are those of Boko Haram in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states and IDPs for various reasons in Taraba, Cross River, Edo and Lagos states.

To raise this lump sum, Dr Barde said each of the union’s 40, 000 members in the 60 universities is to contribute N5000 each at N1000 monthly over a period of five months.

“The national body of the union has concluded plans for the commencement of this all-inclusive intervention in the upkeep of IDPs rendered so for whatever reason across the country,” he announced.

He said the national body of the union had already inaugurated a committee two months ago to collect the donations.
