Environmental Society harps on green economy

The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has identified green economic strategies as imperative for an all-round development of human and natural resources to achieve a resilient economy.

A professor of Eco-toxicology and Environmental Forensic at the University of Benin and national president of NES, Lawrence IkechukwuEzemonye, mentioned this at the 5th annual conference of the society.

He said many nations have since embarked on green economic strategies to achieve a resilient economy that provides a better quality of life with a significant reduction in devastation to the environment and ecological demands.

While noting that Nigeria is faced with numerous and diverse ecological challenges ranging from flooding, erosion, deforestation and desertification cutting across the length and breadth of the country, he stressed that green economy with its other components such as eco-innovation deserves various considerations for the sustainable development of the nation’s economy.

“In fact the present posture of greening the economy of the Federal Government is a welcome development. The economic gains that are derivable from this are immeasurable considering the size of investment opportunities that are available for utilization. The benefit to the environment will be amazing and sustainable. 

Earlier, the chairman of Kaduna State chapter of NES, Dr. Sunday Akoh, stated that going green aims at pursuing practices that will lead to environmentally friendly lifestyle as well as protect the environment for the future. 

According to him, the world has moved away from fossil relied economy to a green one, and stressed the need to be proactive in protecting the earth’s ecological balance.
