The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that a total of 14,756 candidates are having their results withheld in the 2017 October/November West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) held by the council.
The Head of WAEC National Office, Olu Adenipekun made the revelation while announcing the result of the October/November examination otherwise known as Private Candidates examinations.
According to Olanipekun, the 14,756 candidates whose results are being withheld represent 11.07 percent of the total number of 133, 223 candidates who sat for the examinations.
"The results of 14,756 candidates, representing 11.07 percent of the total candidature for the examination are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
"The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course for consideration. The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates," the WAEC Head said.
Olanipekun also disclosed that a total of 34,664 candidates representing 26.01 percent obtained credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language.
"The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for private candidates in 2015 and 2016 was 28.59 percent and 38.50 percent, respectively," he said.
