Three people were confirmed dead by the Kwara state Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) after angry youths attacked the residence of Senator Mohammed Sha’aba Lafiagi located in Lafiagi area, Edu Local Government.

The Public Relations Officer of the command‎, Mr Kunle Bilesanmi, ‎ confirmed that some youths burnt down a portion of the Senator’s residence.

He however, added that the command could not ascertain those that shot the victims.

Our correspondent gathered that crisis erupted when youths barred Sen. Sha’aba from coming into the town.

Sha’aba, a former governor of the state is representing Kwara North at the 8th Senate.

A source who craved for anonymity said the development was as a result of the failure of the Senator to assist the community in fixing a collapsed culvert on the road to the town.

The youth were said to have barricaded the road when Sha’aba was coming into his hometown for the council polls.

They threatened that the Senator would not come in through the culvert that they personally mobilised to partially rehabilitate.

The source stated that when the senator was finding it difficult to gain access into the town, he called for security reinforcement.

"When Senator Sha’aba was coming in, the youth block the road that he would not enter because he didn’t assist them with the fixing of the culvert they later fixed partially themselves.‎ This led to the killing of three youth by the soldiers. When it was becoming too difficult to enter, he sought for a security reinforcement. These soldiers that came started shooting sporadically and this led to the killing of three youth.

"The youth also avenged by setting the residential building of the senator on fire", the source said.

A man, who claimed that his young brother was among the three victims, threatened that no election would hold in the town.

Lafiagi is the headquarters of Edu local government, a council that is populated by the Nupe minorities in the state.
