The Senate yesterday commenced the process to establish a federal polytechnic in Silame, Sokoto state to address manpower challenge in the state.
A bill for the establishment of the polytechnic sponsored by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC, Sokoto) scaled second reading during plenary session yesterday presided over by the Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu.
The bill has been referred to the Senate committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative action. The committee is expected to revert back to the Senate in two weeks.
Leading the debate, Wamakko said the need to establish the institution was informed by imperative to create more access to higher technical education in view of the large number of qualified candidates.
