The Oyo State House of Assembly has elected the immediate past Minority Leader, Hon. Olagunju Ojo, as the new Speaker of the House, three weeks after the demise of the former speaker, Hon. Michael Adeyemo.
Adeyemo died on April 27 after a brief illness.
The new Speaker, representing Orire State Constituency, was former Deputy Speaker (1999-2003). He emerged unopposed after he was nominated by Joshua Oyebamiji (APC/Akinyele 1) and seconded by Gbenga Oyekola (LP/Atiba).
The new Speaker in his acceptance speech said his immediate task was to unite the members of the House and sustain the leadership legacies of peace and harmony which the deceased speaker worked hard to achieved up until his death.
He also called on the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led Executives to as a matter of priority and urgency, consider naming any monuments, institutions or infrastructure after the late Speaker as well as complete the road to Lanlate from Ibadan, pointing out that such will gladden the hearts of the lawmakers and the people of the region.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slated a bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Ibarapa East Constituency in the state House of Assembly for Saturday, June 2.
The INEC resident electoral commissioner (REC) I for the state, Mutiu Adegoke disclosed this in Ibadan on Tuesday during a press conference held at the state headquaters of the commission.
The seat became vacant as a result of the death of the immediate past speaker of the House Micheal Adeyemo, on Friday, April 27.
