FG to inject N72 billion on electricity companies

The Federal Government will invest N72 billion on the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), towards achieving an uninterrupted power supply in the country.

The Minister of State II for Power, Works and Housing, Alhaji Sulaiman Hassan Jara, stated this on Sunday in Gombe while commissioning a 1x30MVA, 132/33KV transformer at the Gombe Transmission Substation.

He said the federal government is investment the money for the DISCOs to improve their network so that the massive investment by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) can lead to economic growth and development of the country.

Sulaiman Jara said projects being executed by TCN and the GENCOs would not lead to significant improvement in the quality of power supply in the country, until the DISCOs also invest in rehabilitation and expansion of their networks.

The minister added that the capacity of the substation at 132/33KV prior to the installation was 105 MVA.

“The upgrading of the capacity has been raised to 135MVA and customers of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) in Gombe and its environs are expected to experience remarkable improvement in power supply,” he said.

The Head of Transmission Service Provider at the TCN, Victor Adewumi, said that the newly installed transformer will strengthen the electricity stability and boost power supply in the state.
