The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has called on the administration of the President Muhammadu Buhari to end the recurring killings in different parts of the country.
Awujale made the appeal at the second annual Oba Sikiru Adetona 2nd annual Professorial Chair Lecture held in Ijebu Ode on Thursday.
“The killings these days are very worrisome. I will like to appeal to the Federal Government to please provide good security for the people, after all, to secure lives and properties is the fundamental responsibility of government. If you build hospitals, build roads, it is the people who will use it. Therefore, government must do everything to secure the people. Security these days are very crucial,” Oba Adetona said.
The Awujale also appealed to government at all level to always carry traditional rulers along in the scheme of things because they are those who are closest to the people.
He recalled that when the colonialists were around, the traditional rulers were often taken into confidence, lamenting that current politicians no longer recognise their roles.
The guest lecturer, Prof. Ayodele Olukotun, who spoke on the topic: “Civil Society & Governance in Nigeria’s Evolving Democracy 1999 – 2018,” said it is important for civil rights activists to re-invent and make their impacts, especially in the struggle for good governance in the country.
