The directive by President Muhammadu Buhari for the clean up of Ogoniland has been described as a positive step in addressing the challenges of environmental degradation suffered by oil producing communities in the Niger Delta.
One of the community leaders and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, said the directive has demonstrated Buhari’s readiness to address the problems of the Niger Delta and the rest of the country.
The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) carried out an assessment of the effects of oil exploration in Ogoniland and recommended the immediate intervention to clean up the area.
