The Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has approved establishment of the Centre for Economic, Social and Population Research (CESPOR).
The chairman of a round table-discussion on agenda setting for the centre, Professor Isma’il M. Zango, disclosed this while speaking to Daily Trust.
Professor Zango said approval for the take-off of the centre was expected to be given at the Senate meeting slated for August 12.
He said after the endorsement, a report will be forwarded to the university’s council for final approval.
Professor Zango said the objective of the centre is to resolve challenges affecting the economic, social and demographic development in the country through promotion of high quality researches.
Earlier, the immediate past chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Muhammad Attahiru Jega, suggested that the centre be autonomous, to enable it carry out its responsibilities independently.
He also advised the organizing committee to set short, medium and long term plans for effective take-off of the centre.
Prof. Jega cautioned the centre against reliance on the university for funding, urging it to device ways to attract funding from foreign private agencies.
