Elders of Akwa Ibom State have condemned last Friday’s invasion of the state Government House by officials of the Directorate of State Security Service DSS, describing it as rape on democracy and threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing, spokesman of the group and former military administrator of the state, Idongesit Nkanga, said the raid “was a calculated attempt to intimidate and harass the governor and his government in the face of the federal might’’.
He said the people of Akwa Ibom State are alarmed by what he called the unwarranted invasion.
“The strong-arm show exhibited by the invading team, which held the entire Government House complex and the adjourning areas of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital to ransom is a clear evidence that the action was not just a routine surveillance act but a calculated attempt at intimidating the governor and his government,’’ the elders said in a statement.
Nkanga described the action as an emerging face of fascism and called on well meaning Nigerian to condemn it, ‘‘before it consumes our well cherished democracy’’.
