The Kwara State government has warned residents of the state living in river banks to vacate to avert flood.
The Special Adviser to Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed on Emergency and Relief services, Alhaji Abdullahi Duro-Mohammed, gave the warning when he visited some flood prone areas in llorin, the state capital.
The special adviser said the warning was in response to the federal government’s directive that water would soon be released from various dams.
Duro-Mohammed said the gradual release of water from dams and the expected heavy rains might lead to flood.
He said the state government would form a strong synergy with the federal government to ensure quick completion of ongoing channelization and dredging of some rivers in the state.
The governor’s aide also said government was deeply concerned about the likely loss of lives and property as well as other negative environmental consequences which floods normally bring.
He advised people of the state, especially those living in flood prone areas to desist from dumping refuse in water channels to prevent flooding.
