The Sokoto State Hisbah Commission says it has arrested 80 grain sellers at the Sokoto Central Market for tampering with the measuring plates.
The commission said that, by their action, the traders were shortchanging members of the public because tampering of measures leads to reduction in the quantity of the grains especially rice and millet.
The state Commandant of the Commission Dr Adamu Bello Kasarawa, said a sack of grains which should have 40 measures would be reduced to just over 30, and that such a practice could not be condoned.
Kasarawa pointed out that it was contrary to Islamic tenets, adding that before the commission took the action it enlightened the traders on the dangers and implication of their actions in Islam.
The chairman said the commission had visited some local government areas towards ensuring traders do not cheat buyers.
