The federal government saved N1.2 billion from the biometrics verification exercise carried out on police, Customs, Immigration and Prisons pensioners by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Daily Trust gathered.
It was learnt that during the exercise, 3,000 ghost pensioners were discovered.
The Director General of PTAD, Mrs. Nellie Mayshak, made the disclosure yesterday while fielding questions from newsmen during the biometric verification exercise of civil servants from the North-west zone.
He said after the North-east, the directorate would be at the South-east.
She added that the exercise was meant to ensure the monthly payment of pensioners as well as to have an authentic list of retirees.
“Through this exercise, we will restore monthly payments to genuine pensioners previously removed from the payroll, including 750 pensioners made up of 529 regular police retirees and 221 Next of Kin who have never been paid pension or gratuity; some for over ten years,” she added.
