Minister tasks committee on dams, reservoirs

Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe, Minister of Water Resources who gave the task while opening the 2014 Symposium of NICOLD noted that Nigeria has over 200 dams located in different parts of the country for multipurpose uses.
“A number of these dams have the potentials for hydropower generation,  this is apart from the large network of rivers in all parts of the country with huge potentials for hydropower generation as well,” she said.
She said that dams contribute immensely to the nation’s economy through their multipurpose uses in irrigated agriculture, domestic water supply, hydropower generation, reservoir fishery and tourism.
She challenged the members to brace up and redouble their contribution to national development, considering the committee composition of men and women who have proven their worth both locally and internationally.
