Abuja varsity lecturers embark on strike

Speaking with Daily Trust on phone yesterday, Chairman of the UniAbuja branch of the union Mr Ben Ugheoke said: ‘’we have shut down and stopped rendering services until our demands are addressed.’’
The demands include the release and implementation of a white paper on an earlier constituted visitation panel by the Federal Government on July 16, 2012.
“We want the visitation panel white paper released and be implemented accordingly by concern authority,” Ugheoke said.
Other demands are; non-remittance of deductions check off their dues which the lecturers said is a violation of the Trade union acts and other levies that are yet to be remitted to the union accounts since May last year.
“Our promotion arrears since 2010 have been hanging in the balance; no one can say what’s happening as all efforts have fallen on deaf ears. We equally demand promotion into professorial cadre be done according to stipulated rules and regulations,’’ he said.
Spokesman of the Education ministry was not immediately available for comment last night.
