Oyo tanker fire: Govt moves to eradicate street trading

The fire disaster claimed no fewer than 22 lives and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
The decision was made known at a press conference jointly addressed by the commissioners of Information, Gbade Lana, Trade, Investment and Cooperatives, Funke Oworu and Environment and Habitat, Olujide Adewale.
According to the commissioners, the resolve to sanction street traders in the state was in good faith.
They appealed to politicians, particularly the opposition, “not to take political advantage of the present administration’s genuine love for the people of the state, especially street traders, as they must have seen the danger of politicising sincere government policies.”
Meanwhile, the government has set up a special committee headed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Gbade Lana, and other commissioners and special advisers to ensure that street trading is totally eradicated from the state, especially in Ibadan and its environs.  
Lana said: “The steps to be taken by the committee include the enforcement of the law banning street trading by the YRS-O cadets and other security agencies and building of consensus between the state government and market leaders to work together in ensuring that the law is obeyed.
“We will also establish a database of market traders so as to know the number of people involved as well as facilities/provisions to be put in place to accommodate the affected traders.
“We will establish an expanded consultative forum which will consist of chairmen of local government areas, market leaders, security agencies, government officials and other stakeholders to meet and discuss the enforcement, from time to time, until compliance is ensured.”
