Lagos PDP, APC at loggerheads over LG election

The tenure of the current councils would expire in the next few days.
PDP was the first to fire the salvo in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary Taofeek Gani in what it described as “a deliberate attempt to suppress the rights of the electorate to elect their local government representatives.”
The party said the decision by LASIEC not to conduct election even when it is apparent that the tenure of current occupiers will lapse by October 29, 2014 is setting a bad precedence for democracy.
“We are disappointed in Governor Fashola, LAHA and the LASIEC for getting so undemocratic and not accommodating of any competition.”
But in a countered statement issued by Lagos State APC publicity secretary, Joe Igbokwe, the party described PDP’s claim as “baseless and the biggest joke of the 21st Century.”
“Now, contrary to this bedtime stories of Lagos PDP, we want to make it clear that Lagos State government is prepared to conduct LG elections as it has been doing in the past when INEC concludes its delineation exercise in some states in the country.”
The party however said it will be wrong to conduct local government election when INEC delineation exercise is still on, adding that when the term of the present occupiers lapse, the administration will appoint caretaker committees to oversee the affairs of the councils.
