‘Why FRSC relocated academy from Jos to Enugu’

State Sector Commander of FRSC, Sunday Maku said in Jos that: “the idea for the relocation was actually mooted about 15 years ago by the former regime of FRSC as a policy decision and not by the present management of FRSC. Jos was used as a temporary or make-shift site for the academy as construction of the permanent site in Enugu started over a decade ago.”
Maku, who said the movement of the academy was in line with FRSC management decision, noted that some FRSC offices have been moved in the past.
“If the people of Makurdi had protested then, it means that the zonal office will not have been in Jos. The land and structures where the academy was operating belongs to the FRSC and was at no given time given to the corps by the Plateau State government. The present Corps Marshall and the chairman of FRSC governing board were not instrumental to the movement in question as perceived and opinionated by Plateau youths and members of House Committee on works and Transport,” he said.
Youths in Jos under the Coalition of Plateau Youths had last week staged a protest over the relocation of the academy to Enugu, describing the action as politically motivated. The protest caused the House Committee on Works and Transport to summon the sector commander for explanation.
Chairman of the committee, Pomak Rindap, said though the legislature was not satisfied by the explanation, they will continue to lobby and plead with FRSC to leave the academy in Jos.
Similarly, spokesperson for the Coalition of Plateau Youths, Friday Bako, told Daily Trust that the youths will not relent in their agitation, adding:  “If it is true that Plateau State was only a temporary site, they should provide documents to prove it.  The academy was brought to Jos in 2007, yet we are being told that the idea for the relocation was conceived 15 years ago; how can you relocate something that did not exist.”
