Man accused of beating couple, causes miscarriage to pregnant wife

The police also accused the man of causing miscarriage to the pregnant wife of the man as a result of the beating.
The accused, Dahiru Haruna, 25, was charged with joint act, causing grievous hurt and miscarriage, offences that contravened Sections 79, 242 and 232 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor, Lawrence Alu, informed the court that on March 8, one Charles Ofua, a resident of Gwagwa town, reported to the police that the accused, and another person now at large, assaulted him and his wife, Rose Ofua, when they went to a stream in the town to wash their clothes.
The prosecutor said the complainant went to a vegetable’s farm nearby to ease himself and the accused and one other person, now at large, confronted him and in the process started beating him and inflicted injuries to his face.
According to the prosecutor, the wife of the accused rushed to the scene to intervene but the accused beat her and matched her on her stomach, which caused her miscarriage.
The prosecutor said the complainant and his wife were taken to a clinic at Gwagwa, where they were treated and told that the wife had lost her five months pregnancy, adding that the couple was charged N25,000 as medical bill.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty, maintaining that what took place was a fight between him and the complainant, which did not involve the complainant’s wife.
Judge Muhammad Lawal Munnir ordered for the remand of the accused person and adjourned the case to April 8 for hearing.
