Abdullahi Mu’azu Mahmud: When moments become memory

My daddy loved spending time with his family; gardening, listening to electronic media, writing and reading were his hobby and he also loved tea. His smile was always a beacon of light to those around him as he always had a kind word to say to those around him. He always said there is so much education to be gained through reading, as well as serving as a way to relax. He was always ready to purchase books that advanced and widened his knowledge. He read anything that he could lay his hands on – we have indeed lost a great teacher and negotiator in this world. Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

Our dad had the ability of multi-tasking; he facilitated synergy and was free from prejudices and preconception of religion and culture. He applied ideology of racial, cultural and ethnic diversity with the demography of his land. One of his usual quotes is: “A successful individual must have the courage to assume responsibility, serve, challenge, participate in transformation, and leave if necessary”.

He had always imbibed in the people around him the desire to read, be honest and follow the teachings of “Qur’an and Sunnah” and use whatever knowledge they gain to help our community.

I remember all of the wonderful things that he did. He was always there for all of us. That’s the kind of man my dad was; it was never about him, but always about others. I especially loved to watch his eyes light up whenever he saw one of his grandchildren. Like a candle in the wind his life glowed and died when he was most needed. As we write this tribute in tears, the heart still aches with much pain but we know you are with the One who loves you most.

He retired as Director, Lecturer N.T.I, member UNICEF/UNDP who received a lot of international awards throughout his life.

He was survived by a wife that they clocked their 50th anniversary, 10 children, two brothers and two sisters. We pray to the Almighty Allah to reward him with Aljanna Firdaus. What it means to miss you no one will ever know, we will insha-Allah apply our best to carry out what you left because we know and appreciated your gesture towards us. We also pray to Allah (S.W.A) to grant all of us members of your family and other people the strength to bear the loss. Our dear father of inestimable value, your memories will forever remain fresh in our mind. Rest in peace!
