The five-by-four-metre canvas was embellished with bead work by crafters from Khayelitsha in Cape Town. The auction gala was attended by thousands of celebrities.
The proceeds of the Legacy Canvas go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Other auction items such as a pair of designer shoes belonging to pop icon, Grace Jones; an autographed script of the film, ‘Blood Diamond’, a special edition of a Mandela T-shirt designed by Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Honsou, raised R457 500 for two mayoral charities: the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust and the Beautiful Gate Ministry for children living with HIV/Aids. Pledges by guests will bring in another R15 000. This brings the total charity proceeds of the evening to R2 972 500.
