The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved N6,972,986,898 for the contract for the provision of security equipment and associated infrastructure for the United Nations building in Abuja.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said the contract was awarded to Messers Julius Berger PLC with a completion period of 13 months.
He recalled that the ongoing reconstruction of the UN building, bombed in August 2011 by Boko Haram terrorists, was almost completed.
He said the Federal Government decided to reconstruct the building to reaffirm its commitment to the ideals of the UN and to reciprocate the international body’s gestures towards Nigeria.
Bello stressed that in order to properly secure the building against future attacks, the UN at the highest level contacted the Nigerian government Nigeria and requested that some very critical security infrastructure be put up in the building "to enable the approximately 18 agencies of the UN that are presently housed in many buildings across Abuja so that they can relocate to the building."
