Nupe Day: Governors of Niger, Kano turbaned in Bida

The event, which took place yesterday in Bida also witnessed the turbanning of the wife of Niger State Governor, Hajiya Jummai Aliyu and the wife of the Governor of Kano State Halima Shekarau.

Dr Aliyu was turbaned as the Sodangin Nupe (One who showers affection to Nupe people) and the Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau became the Wazirin Raya Kasar Nupe (arrowhead for development).

Hajiya Jummai Babangida Aliyu became the Garkuwan Matan Nupe, while the wife of Kano State Governor, Halima became Soniyan Kasar Nupe.

 The event which took place at the Wadata palace of the Emir of Bida also saw the turbaning of former Justice of the Federation, Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi and the former Justice of the Supreme Court.  Other dignitaries present at the occasion included the Governors of Katsina, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, Kwara, Alhaji Bukola Saraki and the Deputy Governor of Benue, Steve Lawani  

The Vice President Namadi Sambo was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and a host of distinguished personalities from across the federation graced the occasion.

The Governor of Kwara State who also doubled as the chairman of Governors Forum, in his remark, thanked the Etsu Nupe for his effort in preserving tradition of the Nupe Kingdom, as he stated that only through the preservation of cultural heritage can true tradition be showcased.

He urged him not to relent in maintaining the legacies handed down over the years by past Etsus, stressing that by doing so he would have maintained a legacy of morality and culture in the people.  The Nupe Day celebration which is the second of its kind since the existence of the Nupe people was packed full by its sons and daughters from within and outside
