He stated this in Lagos at the launch of a partnership arrangement with DStv Mobile, MTN and Nokia that will see DStv deliver10 DStv channels exclusively to MTN service subscribers on Nokia 5330 phones.
“Africa is making waves in the new and exciting area of mobile TV and Nigeria is leading the way. We strongly believe in mobile TV in Nigeria and the effect the success would have on the global stage,” he said.
Though Nigeria is a relatively new entrant into the mobile TV hub, compared to South Africa and Egypt, it has within a short period grown to rival the old players.
He said, with the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV edition, an entertainment hub supporting mobile broadcast, social networking and gaming in a 3-G format, Nigerians would be able to watch three live Super Sports channels deliver the world cup excitement on the move and irrespective of the broadcast time.
The drive he said is a compelling need to push the boundary of entertainment by making live TV available to Nigerians particularly at this time of the world cup in South Africa.
Okunola explained that for now, subscribers would have access to DStv mobile by buying the Nokia phone which costs N28,000 without any subscription until March 2011 when some form of unspecified subscription fee would be introduced based on demands dynamics
Besides the three Super Sport channels, seven additional channels – Africa Magic, Magic World, CNN, TBN, Cartoon Network, NTA and Channel O will be available with the possibility of six additional channels in the future, he said.
According to Nokia West Africa general manager, Philip de la Vega, the introduction of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV edition responds to the arrival of DVB-H broadcast mobile TV networks in new markets, including Nigeria and when charged can give you 6 hours of TV.
