The mother of the boy, Aisha Umar told the court that the woman, Ai Maikare, had charmed her son Bashar Umar, thereby luring him into marrying her. She said he had never thought of getting married even to a young girl not to talk of a woman old enough to be his grandmother.
Aisha Umar also sought permission of the court to bring three witnesses whom she said could testify that her son was charmed by Ai Maikare. She further explained that the age disparity between the couple was too high and the marriage was contracted without her consent as mother of the boy.
However, responding to questions from the presiding judge of the court, the respondent Ai Maikare, said due process was followed before the marriage was solemnized by an Islamic scholar.
The 18-year-old husband confessed that he loved his wife and objected to the dissolution of the marriage before a crowd who trooped to the court to witness the trial.
After listening to all parties, the Judge, Malam Bashir Danmani Sule adjourned the case to March 23 2010 for further hearing. Meanwhile, neighbours of the litigants who were at the court, explained that the two women were friends before the marriage saga.
