Guinea, one of Africa’s top sides in the seventies and eighties, have in the last decade experienced dip in its fortunes, and the country is looking forward to the upcoming generation to lift the country’s football from the doldrums.
Not much is known about previous confrontations involving the two countries, but at senior level, the Super Eagles have had tough time surmounting the Syli Stars, then led by Titi Camara, and tomorrow’s tie would not be an easy one as well.
Nigeria’s Coach, John Obuh has expressed wary of the threat of the Junior Sylis of Guinea ahead of this weekend’s Libya 2011 Orange African Youth Championship qualifier.
The Flying Eagles take a 2-0 advantage into this weekend’s second leg clash against the Guineans in Conakry, with Obuh very much aware of the abilities of the Junior Sylis at their backyard.
The trainer, who guided the Golden Eaglets to a silver place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, held on home soil last year reckons a tough outing against the Guineans, who need to score at least three unanswered goals to ease past the former African champions.
“It will be tough in Guinea and we have prepared the players for that,’ Obuh told the media ahead of the team’s departure for Conakry.
The Nigerian coach reckons that they have built on their performance from the first leg and is convinced his charges will deliver an output that will prove positive to their ambitions of advancing to the final round of the qualifying series.
“It was a great opportunity that we got a chance to play against our opponents in the first game because the video clips we watched before the match did not give us a good idea of this team.”
The Flying Eagles wrapped up their preparations with their senior counterparts, Super Eagles and Obuh describes the signal as positive.
“The match against the senior team was just part of training. We were satisfied with the performance of the team, but the result was not important.
“On Sunday, we must do a lot more so as to qualify for the next round of the competition.”
The winner of the Guinea-Nigeria game will face either Mauritius or Zambia at final lap of the qualifiers.
