The Ilaje communities in Ondo State have expressed disgust over their exclusion from Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, (SNEPCO) compensation following the Bonga Oil Spill since 2001.
General secretary of Abereke Communities and field coordinator, Communities Environmental Protection Committee of Ilaje land (CEPCOM),Taiwo Aiyedatiwa, also accused SNEPCO in a statement of failing in carrying out its corporate social responsibilities to the Ilaje coastal communities since its operation in the area till date.
He said, “In the month of January 2014, we are aware that SNEPCO called almost 88 coastal communities in Delta and Bayelsa states to a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja through the House of Representatives Committee on Environment, where the Ministry of Environment, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and other regulatory bodies were in attendance in which the company agreed to compensate the communities.”
“But to our surprise, no single community in Ilaje local government of Ondo State who is SNEPCO’s host community.”
