Erosion: Lawmaker decries substandard projects in A/Ibom

Marlum is a construction firm handling most erosion sites in Akwa Ibom State.
At session with journalists on Tuesday shortly after inspection of the sites around Etim Okon Usanga in Nwaniba, Udofia said the work done was causing more problems rather than solving the issue for which the contract was awarded in the first place.
“I have seen the extent of devastation that occurs here and, it is very shocking and from my observation, the nature of work that was on the water channel looks to me sub-standard and that has helped to create more problems to the residents and the ecology.
“I think the volume of water that is brought to this area was not properly controlled and as a result, it has caused a lot of land sliding and so many houses have been affected and if something is not done immediately, more houses will be destroyed,” he said.
He called on the state government to recall the company to start remedial work before more lives and properties are lost.
President, Environment and Leadership Initiative, a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Mr. Pius Umoren, who led the inspection visit also expressed concern over the devastation done by erosion to the area.
He said if action is not taken by the government, more than 500 people may lose their lives and property worth millions of naira destroyed.
