President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, says President Goodluck Jonathan has chosen the path of honour with his decision to accept defeat in the 2015 presidential election.
Buhari said this inside the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa today after receiving handover notes from Jonathan.
The president-elect said if Jonathan had intended to make things difficult, they would have indeed be difficult.
According to Buhari, President Jonathan has positively changed the course of the nation’s political history.
On the handover notes, Buhari said he would not make any “strong contributions” on the document until he studies and digests it.
Earlier while presenting the handover notes, Jonathan said he believed that “our nation is secure, our democracy is stable and the future is bright. Let us all work together, and with greater resolve, continue to build a stronger and more prosperous nation”.
The president said his administration had done its best to intervene robustly and impact positively on key aspects of national life.
“There is no doubt that challenges still abound, but they are surmountable and overwhelming national transformation remains realisable, with continuity, commitment and consistency,” he added.
Jonathan said Nigeria is blessed with citizens that will always remain faithful, firmly committed to national unity, accelerated political, social and economic development.
The president also presented a copy of the recommendations of the National Conference to his successor; expressing optimism that the document would guide the latter’s administration.
Jonathan had earlier this morning conducted Buhari round the Presidential Villa; while Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo had also done same for the vice president-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
The presentation of the handover notes was witnessed by All Progressives Congress National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun and other party’s stakeholders such as Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Ogbonaya Onuh, Lai Mohammed, APC transition committee chairman, Ahmed Joda as well as members of Jonathan’s cabinet.
Buhari will take oath of office at the Eagles Square, Abuja, tomorrow.
