Flood: NYSC partners NEMA in public sensitisation

This is against the background of the havoc caused by flooding a few years ago in which hundreds of people were displaced and property worth billions of naira lost.
Youth Corpers under the aegis of NEMA/NYSC Emergency Management Vanguard in their hundreds,  stormed Agara community in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State yesterday in a road walk during which they campaigned from house to house warning the residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water channels to avert flooding.
Led by their president, Awomuti Adeboye, the NEMA/NYSC Emergency Vanguard visited the Agara river which overflowed into neighbouring households following last week’s heavy downpour in which yet to be unquantified properties were destroyed.
One of the community leaders, Mr. Adeyemi Azeez, told the visiting young anti-flood campaigners that residents have been battling in vain to checkmate perennial flooding in the area since the past five or six years just as he appealed for the federal government’s intervention in the area of dredging the Agara stream and replacing the present culverts with an enduring bridge.
Another resident, Chief Ayodeji Ajayi, insisted that the culvert on the Agara river was too narrow to contain the high volume of the flowing water hence the recurring flooding of the entire neighbourhood.
