US raises concern over Nigeria’s depleting wildlife

Entwistle said at an event marking the celebration of the 2015 World Earth Day in Abuja that: “Elephants which once roamed widely in the country are today limited to only five reservations and even there, their numbers are rapidly declining because they have been killed by ivory poachers and farmers who perceive them as risk to their crops.
“Wildlife populations are part of the nation’s heritage and their preservation should be a national as well as international concern,” the ambassador added.
Entwistle also noted that oil spill in Ogoniland and other parts of the Niger Delta posed serious concern to the wellbeing of the nation.
“As one of the world’s leading crude producers, Nigeria has a special responsibility to ensure that throughout the extraction, refining and delivery processes, the integrity of the product is preserved,” he said.
