Senate presidency: North-central caucus considers Lawan, others

The caucus, worried by the intensity of Senators Bukola Saraki and George Akume’s  campaign and lack of time, was said to be contemplating looking beyond the zone for a consensus if the candidates  cannot reach a compromise.
The APC National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to make public the party’s decision on zoning, this week.
But the ambitions of the two ranking senators became a source of worry to the party’s caucus in the Senate as both have gone far in reaching out to their colleagues in the bid to secure the position.
Returning senators were said to be supporting Akume, while the newly-elected senators queued behind Saraki.
The stalemate, a source in the caucus indicated, has thrown up the option of considering others for the seat.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Ahmad Lawan, from Yobe State who is also a strong contender, was said to be considered by the caucus, in case the North-central option failed to pull through.
