Witnesses said the suspect, who seemed to be having mental illness, used to collect refuse in the market while he got paid for his services.
One of the witnesses told City News that the deceased, named Abdur-Rashid Balogun, was into scrap materials business at the Yangwangwan area around the IBB Market until his death.
According to the witness, the unfortunate incident happened when the suspect dumped refuse inside the drainage located close to where the deceased worked.
The witness said crisis erupted when the deceased reminded his assailant that dumping refuse in that location has been prohibited in order to avert flood during rainy season.
Another witness, Ahmed, alleged that the deceased caned the accused after sharp argument ensued between them.
It was at that point, he said, that the suspect took a knife from a roasted yam seller close to the scene and stabbed the deceased on his neck.
Speaking on the incident, one of the leaders of the scrap material dealers in the area, said they took the victim to Suleja General Hospital, where he was certified dead.
He said the accused tried to flee the area after the incident but he was caught and handed over to the police at Suleja “A” division.
Police officers at the station confirmed the incident when our reporter visited the station at the weekend.
When contacted, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Ibrahim Gambari, also confirmed the incident but said he had not gotten the details.
