Reps demand rescue centres on highways

The agencies, the lawmakers said, should also be able to maintain and equip the centres with complete fire fighters and ambulance services on strategic locations on federal highways to minimise accident fatalities.
Rep Stella Dorgu (PDP Bayelsa) who moved the motion said such measures were necessary in view of the recent multiple accident that claimed the lives of 11 people including the wife of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State government.
She said it was worrying that the World Health Organisation’s report stated that Nigeria accounts for 33.7 percent of 100,000 for deaths on the roads every year in Africa.
The House also agreed to mandate the federal government to establish functional emergency, casualty and trauma centres in hospitals to aid healthcare delivery in the country.
