A firm that deals with environmental issues, PRIGEM Concepts Nigeria, has implored the federal government to put in place stiff sanctions to regulate some of the harmful environmental practices carried out by persons and organisations in the country.
The managing partner of the firm, Owa Olumayowa Raymond, who noted this in a statement said regulating some of these unwholesome practices would go a long way in putting people on their toes to do the right thing.
He said the issue of global warming which had resulted to a number of climatic refugees was mind blowing and the facts that some people’s live and livelihood would never return to normal. “No one ever envisaged a loss of this magnitude in Nigeria or even Africa at large, as it would possibly never be recovered from,” he said.
“We advocate therefore, that adequate mitigation plans on sustaining the environment to foster the necessary improvement amongst other practices should start remediation of the planet so as not to make an already bad situation worse,” he said.
While berating the indiscriminate disposal of waste on streets, he said toxins released into the atmosphere from those landfills caused air pollution that affects the people living around these dump and incineration sites, resulting in several health challenges.
He however, said there was need for responsible consumption with zero waste generation target. “Waste generated can be turned into energy with reasonably less dioxins and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission to help prevent air pollution and ultimately reduce global temperature co-efficient as we aim to prevent it from hitting the dreaded 2 degrees Celsius,” he said.
