Nigeria needs N5bn for family planning commodities annually

The Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, has said that Nigeria requires about N5bn to meet its family planning needs annually.
The UNFPA boss, who was speaking during a press briefing after his three-day working visit to Nigeria, said that the amount was small in view of the return on investment.
Osotimehin said that the inability of Nigeria to procure the commodities would not affect UNFPA’s contributions to Nigeria which amounted to US$7m in commodities and lifesaving drugs in 2015.
It would be recalled that at a meeting Osotimehin held earlier in the year with the president and minister of finance on family planning, Nigeria agreed to annually increase its contributions to getting commodities for the country up to point when it would be solely be responsible for getting the commodities for its people.
