The National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has asked manufacturers in Kano State to either adhere to the rules and regulations for environmental protection or face the wrath of the law.
The Director-General of the Agency, Dr Laurence Chide Anukam, who made the call at one-day stakeholders meeting with manufacturers in Kano State, warned that the agency would not condone non-compliance by the manufacturers.
Anukam said that the agency had shut seven manufacturing companies in the state for non-compliance with laid down rules and regulations for environmental protection.
“The affected companies have been taken to court for prosecution and we will continue to monitor manufacturing facilities in the state until they all comply with our rules,” he said.
He alleged that some of the pollution control facilities used by the companies were obsolete, saying that the NESREA would not condone such attitude anymore.
The director-general said that manufacturers should create awareness programme for host communities to enhance its relationship with them.
He said that the agency was ready to work with any company that is willing to support government achieve its desired objectives of environmental protection.
