Police in Rivers say five officers remain missing after gunmen ambushed officers routine inquiry in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident happened at the Okujagu community, Okrika Local Government.
The officers came under a barrage of heavy gunfire before they could disembark a boat ferrying them, according to the command’s public relation officer, Almad Muhammad.
Under bombardment, the missing officers were among who scampered for over.
“Six policemen comprising two inspectors and four other rank and file could not be accounted for but a day after Inspector Aferuan Imoukhuede who was among the missing policemen was rescued,” said Muhammad.
Sting operations are on to rescue the missing police officers.
Some 53 people have been arrested in connection to the incident and are presently undergoing interrogation.
The State Commissioner of Police has set up a high powered investigative panel headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the entire incident.
