10 die in Lagos auto crash

Ten persons were killed in an auto crash that occurred Monday night at Iyana Yafin along the Mile 2-Badagry expressway in Lagos, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injury.
Eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred when two vehicles: an 18-seater commercial bus fully loaded with passengers and a Mazda saloon car collided. It was gathered that both vehicles burst into flame, with the passengers trapped inside.
Fire fighters from the Lagos State Fire Service were able to rescue 12 of the victims of the accident, while the remaining 10 were burnt to death.
The commercial bus, with registration number KJA654XF, was said to be coming from the Seme end of the Badagry expressway. The driver was said to be driving against traffic from the Gbaji bridge.
“The collision sparked off an instant explosion and three people from the Mazda car, including the driver and seven people from the commercial bus, as well as a baby were completely burnt in the accident which created a traffic snarl that lasted for hours along the ever-busy road despite efforts by traffic managers to control it,” an eye witness said.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed to our correspondent that the accident was caused by the driver of the commercial bus, who drove against traffic in a bid to avoid arrest by men of the Nigerian Customs Service.
